The idea for Read Quest started with a simple observation: kids weren’t reading as much as they used to. As a designer passionate about education and engagement, I wanted to find a way to make reading feel exciting rather than obligatory. I realized that if kids already respond to games with challenges, rewards, and immersive worlds, why not bring that same sense of adventure to books?

The concept of Read Quest emerged from that question — an app that transforms reading into a gamified journey, where stories become quests, progress earns rewards, and every page turns into an opportunity for exploration and growth.

BRINGING THE IDEA TO LIFE

BRINGING THE IDEA TO LIFE

To build out Read Quest, I approached this capstone as a chance to explore how design can make reading feel more fun and inviting for kids. I spent time looking into how children interact with games and digital content, using those insights to shape an experience that feels playful rather than instructional. The goal, to design something that feels easy to use, visually engaging, and motivating—an app that encourages kids to read because they want to, not because they have to.

To bring the concept full circle, I created a short promotional video that introduces Read Quest’s world, mechanics, and visual style in action. The video was exhibited at the UNL Gallery in December 2025, allowing the project to live beyond the screen and be experienced as part of a curated space. Seeing Read Quest presented in a gallery setting reinforced the goal of the project — not just to design an app, but to spark curiosity, conversation, and excitement around reading in a new way.
